Germany: Turkish soldiers have been in Iraq for years

Turkish soldiers had been active in the north of Iraq for years, deputy spokesman of the German foreign ministry Sebastian Fischer said yesterday.

“We do not need more problems in the region, mainly between Turkey and Iraq,” Fischer added.

Speaking to journalists in Berlin, he said that he was “sure” that presence of Turkish troops in Iraq would be discussed in the EU-Turkish summit to be held in Brussels, Belgium.

On 4 December, Ankara sent a 150-troop military unit to replace its staff in Iraq in order to train local forces. It also sent 20-25 military tanks.
