Turkey destroys PKK camps in northern Iraq

Turkey destroyed PKK camps in northern Iraq late yesterday, security sources revealed today.

According to the sources, four F-16s and two F-4 combat aircraft belonging to the Turkish Armed forces hit PKK’s Avasin-Basyan, Gare and Zap camps in northern Iraq.

Turkish warplanes destroyed the shelters and warehouses after they were identified by drones. The operation was also supported by early warning and control aircrafts, sources added.

The PKK – designated a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the EU – renewed its armed campaign against the Turkish state in the aftermath of a 20 July suicide bombing in the southern Turkish city of Suruc that killed 33.

In response, the Turkish government has been conducting an extensive counter-terrorism effort, bombing PKK camps in Turkey and northern Iraq while also striking the group in Syria.
