Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has expressed his fears that “the Israeli government’s policy could lead to Daesh entering the heart of Israel”, reaffirming “our people stand against extremism and terrorism, and support countries that are fighting terrorism.”

In an interview with Radio Monte Carlo Doualiya, Abbas called on the UN Security Council to seek a new resolution that condemns Israeli settlements and provides international protection for the Palestinian people.

He stressed that “the basic condition for achieving peace and a lasting political solution is to restore Palestinian lands along the 1967 borders and for Israel to commit to the international legitimacy which supports a two-state solution.”

“The Palestinians are willing to launch negotiations and reach a peace agreement, but only on the condition that Israel commits to the more than 20 agreements that have been signed since Oslo and that Israel takes the initiative to free the fourth batch of pre-Oslo prisoners, which it agreed to release but has not do so.”

He added that the current Israeli government headed by Benjamin Netanyahu, which includes seven settlers, does not want peace and would not execute any of the agreements signed with Palestinians, and “there is a conviction that the Israeli government will never stop settlement growth, with more than half a million Israeli settlers who are based in the Palestinian territories.”

Abbas stressed that the Palestinian people will remain steadfast and determined and would not leave their country.
