Algeria’s president warns his people of ‘dangerous adventures’

Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has warned the Algerian people of what he called “dangerous adventures” similar to the experiences that resulted in “chaos and civil wars” in some Arab countries.

Algeria’s al- Khabar newspaper reported President Bouteflika on Monday calling on the Algerian people not to forget the devastating period of terror that prevailed in their country.

Bouteflika told the newspaper: “Enhancing the Algerian institutions stability and protecting the country from any adventures was done through a pack of democratic reforms.”

Bouteflika also warned against following the experiences of other countries on issues of democracy and freedoms, arguing that each country has its own unique circumstances.

“We should not simply follow speeches and debates, even if they were correct, by ignoring history and the uniqueness of each society because the hasty adoption of such calls, although they may have had beneficial results in other communities, could lead to dangerous results for us,” he said.

The Algerian parliament adopted on Sunday a package of constitutional amendments proposed by Bouteflika.

The Algerian opposition slammed the amendments.
