Japan pledges $780 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday pledged $780 million in humanitarian assistance during a meeting with the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Tokyo.

Welcoming the Japanese support, Abbas said: “It will contribute to supporting Palestinian institution-building and the development of the national economy.”

Palestinian Minister of National Economy Abeer Odeh also signed an agreement with Japan’s ambassador to Palestine Takeshi Okubo for the restoration of Hisham Archaeological Palace in the West Bank city of Jericho.

Abbas called during a press conference with the Japanese Prime Minister for an international peace conference and the formation of an international mechanism to end the Israeli occupation, according to a specific timetable.

Abbas has warned that Israeli practices in the occupied Palestinian territories will change the conflict from a political conflict to a religious one, stressing that the current Israeli government has been thwarting international efforts to bring an end to the situation.
