Netanyahu: Arab states see Israel as an ally, not an enemy

Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Arab states no longer see Israel as an enemy state but rather as an ally, whereas they consider radical Islam to be their enemy.

Addressing the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Netanyahu said,“Major Arab countries are changing their view of Israel, and you’ve just heard one example, that’s the public one. That is, that they don’t see Israel anymore as their enemy, but they see Israel as their ally, especially in the battle against militant Islam.”

He added that most Arab countries feel threatened by “militant Islam”.

Netanyahu spoke about new ties being forged with Arab countries, “many of them discreet, some of them open”.

Speaking about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Netanyahu said that Israel’s “better relations with the Arab world could help bring progress with the Palestinians” rather than the other way round.

A number of Arab countries have signed peace agreements with Israel and have good relations with the country, especially Egypt, which signed the Camp David Accords with Israel in 1978.

Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, known as Wadi Araba Treaty.
