Tunisia’s Ghannouchi renews support for Syrians’ right to democracy

Leader of Tunisia’s Ennahda Movement Rachid Ghannouchi has reiterated his movement’s support of the Syrian people’s right to have an acceptable, democratic regime.

In remarks to Quds Press, Ghannouchi stressed that his movement has supported the Syrian revolution since its inception in 2011.

According to Ghannouchi, Tunisia was the first country to cut off diplomatic relations with the Syrian regime in 2012.

Remarking on relations with Iran, Ghannouchi explained that there is a general rejection of Tehran’s policies in Syria, Iraq and Yemen and warned of the dangers of sectarian conflicts that divide the region. He called on Iran to stop supporting dictatorships, counter-revolutions and sectarianism.

However, Ghannouchi said he does not believe that estrangement and hostility will solve any differences, stressing that there should be dialogue.

Ghannouchi also reiterated his movement’s rejection of military intervention in Libya and Tunisia’s support for national dialogue.

“We believe that a peaceful solution is a thousand times better than going to sedition and civil war,” he added.
