Global online campaign launched to lift the siege on Gaza

A group of young volunteers for the Palestinian cause have launched an online campaign to break the siege on the Gaza Strip, Quds Press has reported.

According to spokesperson Sarah Sweilem, the campaign will utilise all aspects of electronic media. The goal is to lift the blockade imposed on Gaza. “There is no political umbrella for the youth taking part in the campaign,” she insisted. “The main concern is the siege.”

The activists launched the campaign on Saturday with an Arabic hashtag that translates into #enough_siege on social networking websites. They are trying to influence decision-makers and officials to end the siege that has been imposed on the Gaza Strip for nearly 10 years.

“Our movement was shocked and motivated by the statistics of life on the ground in the Gaza Strip,” explained Sweilem. “There are thousands of patients and… students stranded at the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, as well as cases of dire poverty.”

The organisers believe that the situation in Gaza has been marginalised due to other regional issues.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian authorities continue to keep the Rafah crossing closed to people going to and from the Gaza Strip. This has exacerbated the suffering of Palestinian patients and students, as well as those with foreign residence rights and passports.
