Israeli sources have reported that the Israeli authorities have been putting pressure on Twitter executives in order to shut down Hamas accounts, Quds Press reported on Sunday.
According to the Israeli newspaper Al-Masdar, Twitter closed the English language account of Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas military wing, which had around 15,000 followers, as well as the Arabic language account, which had around 140,000 followers.
The Israeli newspaper said that Hamas accused Twitter of cooperating with Israel to undermine freedom of expression; however, Twitter is an unconditional platform for free speech for everyone.
Hamas also went on to say that Twitter, which has closed tens of Palestinian and pro-Palestine accounts, had become a tool in the Israeli hands to suppress the Palestinians and “restrict their abilities” in order to undermine their liberation from the Israeli occupation.
Al-Masdar noted that, not only Twitter, but also Facebook had closed 15 Palestinian pages, supposing they were owned or run by Hamas, claiming they did not follow Facebook privacy police and adopt “hostile speech and incitement against Israel.”
