Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) yesterday announced a “daily schedule” to cut the power supply to areas in the occupied West Bank within the next two weeks.
In a statement, the IEC said it would cut electricity every day in Palestinian areas because of “the accumulation of debts” owed by the Palestinian Authority.
The PA owes approximately 1.7 billion shekels ($450 million).
The IEC has already reduced the electricity supply to Bethlehem by 50 per cent, leading to power outages in large areas of the city. It said this is part of a new plan to collect debts owed by the PA.
The company has also reduced the supply to the city of Jericho.
It criticised the Israeli government for its ” slow pace of contacts with the Palestinian Authority regarding the payment of past debts.”
