German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stressed the need to “address the roots of the refugee crisis in order to overcome it” by looking at the reasons people flee their countries and come to Europe.
She also called for the continent not to isolate itself from the issue.
Merkel made the statements during a joint press conference with French President Francois Hollande following the 18th French-German cabinet meeting held in Metz, in northeast France on Thursday.
Merkel also said that the solution to the issue is to take action towards a peace process in Syria.
Hollande said that his country and Germany are working together to resolve the refugee crisis, adding that the Schengen agreement principles must be restored.
