Turkey builds three container cities for Syrian refugees

Turkey’s Housing Development Administration is building three container cities for Syrian refugees in south-eastern Hatay and Kahramanmaraş provinces, the head of the organization said Sunday.

“We are building the largest temporary accommodation centres in the world,” Ergün Turan, head of TOKİ, said in a statement.

The three container cities will have the capacity to accommodate up to 40,000 refugees.

“We are building the world’s largest temporary accommodation projects through our sincere efforts for those fleeing from cruelty. We will continue to build the new ones,” he said.

Turkey has adopted an open door policy with Syrian refugees since the outbreak of the crisis, without religious, linguistic or racial discrimination, and provided them with secure lives with good living conditions, he told Anadolu news agency.

Turan said his organisation has established the camps in collaboration with the Prime Ministry’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and has begun to work on the implementation of social facilities and infrastructure there.

Turan explained that more than 80,000 refugees are staying at TOKI camps.

“The camps have all the necessary facilities, including hospitals, schools, mosques, water filtering stations and others,” he said.
