An Egyptian court yesterday sentenced 70 anti-coup activists to prison terms ranging from five to 10 years, a legal source said.
Charged with taking part in demonstrations and breaking into police headquarters in the north of the country in 2014, 11 defendants were handed ten year prison terms, while 59 were given five year terms in absentia. Two people were acquitted.
Speaking to the Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity, the source said the case is known in the media as the “fire of Kafr Al-Dawar police station”.
He explained that the defendants said the investigations were void adding that they would appeal the decision. Egyptian law requires the appeal to be filed within 60 days.
