Turkey begins military operation in Syria

The Turkish military has launched a military operation with the support of international coalition forces to establish a buffer zone on the Syrian side of the border.

Turkish Yeni Safak newspaper said the operation aims to cleanse an area that is 18 kilometres long and eight kilometres deep from Daesh militants who launch shells at the Turkish city of Kilis.

The newspaper said the operation will be supported by the international coalition, particularly the United States and Germany, who will provide air cover for the moderate Syrian opposition forces’ progress.

According to the plan, the Turkish army will strike the militant group with artillery shells, guided missiles and mortars.

Turkey has stepped up its operations against Daesh over the past few days.

On Tuesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that Ankara will deploy US- made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) near the border with Syria.
