UNSC: Targeting healthcare facilities is a ‘war crime’

UN Security Council yesterday condemned the targeting of hospitals and healthcare facilities in Syria, calling it a “war crime”, the Anadolu Agency reported.

The 15 members of the UNSC approved a resolution calling on all parties in Syria to protect hospitals and healthcare centres during the clashes.

The resolution comes a week after the airstrikes that targeted Al-Quds Hospital in Aleppo, north of Syria, which caused the death of at least 30 people.

Since 21 April, Aleppo has been under arbitrary and violent airstrikes by Syrian and Russian air forces. The strikes have further deteriorated the humanitarian situation in the city.

The UN expressed its concerns over the targeting of hospitals, calling it a “flagrant violation of international law.”
