Algeria is calling for the Maghreb Union to be reinstated, the country’s Minister for Maghreb Affairs Abdelkader Messahel said yesterday.
The Anadolu Agency quoted Messahel saying: “Algeria has always called for the reformation of the Union’s bodies and to revise its foundation articles, which have become dated.”
Messahel is to represent his country in the 34th summit of foreign ministers of the Maghreb Union in Tunisia today.
“Activating the Union is connected to the resurrection of the economic situation of the region and making it more capable to deal with youth issues.”
The previous summit for the Maghreb Union was held in Rabat, Morocco, in May 2015. The Union was established on 17 February 1989 in Marrakesh and consists of Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
The foundation treaty for the Union stipulated the reinforcement of brotherhood among member states and maintaining peace based on justice and working gradually to achieving personal freedom and the exchange of services and capital among them.
