Switzerland, on Monday, handed over to Tunisia a cheque with a value of 500 thousand Tunisian dinars as part of the recovery of Tunisian stolen assets.
Ambassador of Switzerland in Tunis Rita Adam handed over the cheque to the head of state litigation on the side-lines of a seminar on the stolen assets recovery system, organised in Tunis by the ministry of public property and land affairs.
The seminar was organised with the assistance of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the European Union.
“We have managed initially to come out with a judgment that provides for the return of 500 thousand dinars to Tunisia,” Adam said.
Tunisian Minister of State Property and Land Affairs Hatem al-Ashi told Tunisia’s Shems FM that some 60 million euros are still blocked in Swiss banks but their retrieval will take a lot of time.
Tunisia’s La Presse newspaper revealed that the recovered funds belonged to Sofiene Ben Ali, nephew of ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
