The Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi participated on Wednesday in a ceremony to return the statue of former President Habib Bourguiba to central Tunis.

“This is not just a cult of personality but of national unity,” Essebsi said in a press statement, adding that “Tunisia is more than ever in need of unity to find a solution to the situation it is living through.”

“We hope the Tunisians will find a common factor to move towards more progress and prosperity,” the president said.

The ceremony was attended by the House of People’s Representatives Speaker Mohamed Ennaceur and Prime Minister Habib Essid.

Former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali ordered the relocation of Bourguiba’s statue to the city of La Goulette after taking office.
