Egypt offers condolences to Turkish people, bypasses Erdogan and his government

The official spokesman of Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Zeid yesterday expressed Egypt’s condemnation of the terrorist attack that struck central Istanbul, Turkey, killing 11 and injuring 36.

In a statement, Abu Zeid stressed that Egypt stands with the people of Turkey at this critical moment, and expressed his country’s condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a swift recovery. No mention was made of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan or his government.

The Turkish city of Istanbul woke up to a car bomb that targeted a police bus in the Beyazit area. Seven policemen were amongst those killed.

Some Turkish parties were quick to blame the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), with experts saying the manner of the attack was reminiscent of a PKK style bombing.

The attack came hours after the Turkish airforce struck PKK bases.
