Egyptian court cancels freeze of Aboutrika’s assets

An Egyptian court yesterday reversed a decision to freeze the assets of famous Egyptian footballer Mohamed Aboutrika, judicial sources told the Anadolu Agency.

Aboutrika had appealed against the decision, the sources said, adding that the verdict is still “initial and it is subject to appeal”.

However, according to the state-run newspaper Akhbar Al-Youm, Aboutrika’s lawyer said that the decision is “final”, stressing that any appeal to suspend it is useless according to the law and the Constitution.

He also said that the decision requires that the government committee formed to freeze the assets of the Muslim Brotherhood stop monitoring Aboutrika’s assets.

The footballer’s assets were frozen on 31 May 2015. He appealed against the decision saying it was based on false information.
