The United Arab Emirates has detained two Turkish generals serving in Afghanistan and handed them over to Turkish authorities over suspicions that they took part in the failed coup attempt.

The commander of Turkey’s task force in Afghanistan, Major General Mehmet Cahit Bakir, and Kabul Training, Support and Advising Commander Brigadier General Sener Topuc were detained in Dubai International Airport as they traveled from Afghanistan.

Turkish diplomatic sources told the Anadolu Agency that the detention followed cooperation between the Turkish National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) and the UAE authorities.

Ankara blames US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen for the failed coup attempt.
