Algerian, Tunisian officials discuss new border tax

Algerian and Tunisian officials met on Tuesday to discuss the movement of their citizens between the two countries and ways of enhancing it.

The meeting came following a series of protests staged by Algerians at a number of border crossings after Tunisia introduced a tax of 30 Tunisian dinars ($13.7) on each car which is brought into the country from Algeria.

A statement issued by the Algerian ministry said that the meeting was held “with an emphasis on the importance of continuing the bilateral work and cooperation to lift all obstacles associated with the movement of persons between Algeria and its neighbour Tunisia, which represents a distinctive tourist destination for Algerian citizens.”
