Algerian minister criticises double standards regarding terrorism

Algerian Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel said yesterday that the war on terror must not be exposed to the logic of double standards, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Messahel’s remarks came during the inauguration of a workshop about the role of democracy in protecting countries and fighting extremism and terrorism. The workshop was organised by the Algerian foreign ministry in Algiers and was attended by international experts and organisations.

“If democracy plays a decisive role in fighting terror at the internal level, it must not be dealt differently at the international level,” Messahel said, noting that the difference in defining terrorism and the form of democracy at the international level plays a big role in “instability that serves terror groups”.

Messahel stressed that terror has no location, border or religion. “This phenomenon needs common efforts,” he said, noting that democracy plays a “decisive” role in undermining it.
