Tunisia sentences 46 for killing personnel of former interior minister

A Tunisian court has sentenced 46 people for taking part in a terrorist attack against former Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou in 2014.

Of the 46, 31 were sentenced in absentia for the attack that was claimed by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).  One of the perpetrators, Seifallah Ben Hassine, was sentenced to death for his involvement in the operation however his fate remains uncertain after reports that he was killed in Libya in 2013.

The rest of the cell was sentenced to 36 years in prison after being found guilty of attempted murder whilst seven of those accused were sentenced to ten years and two were acquitted.

In May 2014, a terrorist group led an armed attack against Lotfi Ben Jeddou in Kasserine during which four of his security personnel were killed.

Tunisia has carried out 135 executions since its independence before a moratorium was initiated in 1991. However new anti-terrorism legislation passed in July retained the death penalty despite calls to abolish it.
