A balancing act: Irish circus group trains Gazans

Irish circus group hols cultural exchange with the Gaza Circus School [Mohammed Asad]

An Irish circus group has held a culture exchange event with a school in Gaza.

Majed Kalloub, the founder of the Gaza Circus School, told MEMO that Jennifer Higgins and her team arrived from Ireland via the Erez crossing.

“We learned a variety of different moves and games and we gained a number of skills. Four days was not enough, but the concentrated training is better than nothing,” Kalloub said.

“We gained new skills, techniques, and arts and it was an honour for us to participate in the Circus Culture Exchange – Taking Flight in Gaza project.”

The Gaza Circus School was opened two years ago and is attended by 15 men between the ages of 18 and 40 and children under the age of 15. The students do not pay a fee.

The school survives on donations from local and international people and bodies interested in circus acts
