Kuwait revokes licence plates of illegally parked cars

In Kuwait’s latest attempt to combat illegal parking, authorities have resorted to removing the licence plates of cars that have been parked unlawfully, or in a way that obstructs traffic. “This is a long term campaign and it will be extended to all parts of the country,” a police official told Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai. “We will have a zero-tolerance policy and we will not spare any public place, even hospitals and schools.”

After the licence plate is removed, the officer places a ticket on the car, explaining what has happened and giving details on how to retrieve the licence plate and why parking responsibly is important. The measure, which began on Sunday, would also see drivers being fined 20 Kuwaiti dinars (£66) for their licence plate to be returned. Critics fear the new measures will lead some to drive without a number plate making roads more dangerous.
