Kuwait must maximise its efforts to cut Daesh’s funding

Kuwait still has a substantial amount of work to do to cut the funding and support Daesh receives from within the country, Al Arabiya reported an official saying.

“We still have a lot to do, though we are satisfied with what we have done so far,” Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah informed reporters after a Counter-ISIL Finance Group (CIFG) meeting that took place in Kuwait City, ISIL is another acronym for Daesh.

In response to accusations that Kuwait and Qatar are financing Daesh, he said “we are ready to cooperate with our brothers and friends.”

Al-Jarallah reiterated that Kuwait “has come a long way in introducing legislation that controls the collection of [charity] donations,” which has long been a mechanism for funding extremism.

The CIFG was formed early 2015 and is led by Saudi Arabia, Italy and the US. It is made up of over 35 countries and four international bodies. According to Adam Szubin, the US Treasury’s acting under-secretary on countering the financing of terrorism, the CIFG’s main objective is to take a global approach to weaken the funding of Daesh.
