Hamas: No invitation for reconciliation meetings in Egypt

Hamas has not received any invitation to hold new reconciliation talks in Cairo, Quds Press reported the group’s spokesperson Salah Al-Bardaweel saying yesterday.

Al-Bardaweel stressed that Hamas is eager to accept an invitation on this issue, noting that the ongoing Egyptian efforts towards Gaza are to lessen the suffering of Gaza residents.

“Hamas does not oppose any effort to establish dialogue and it will never be an obstacle ahead of any efforts to lessen the sufferings of the Palestinian people,” Al-Bardaweel said, “but any such effort must be based on the united Palestinian effort to face the [Israeli] occupation.”

The remarks of the Hamas official came in the wake of the reported deal between Islamic Jihad and the Egyptians, including an invitation for the Palestinian factions to start internal dialogue soon in Cairo.

A senior Islamic Jihad delegation chaired by the movement’s Secretary-General Ramadan Shallah has been in Cairo to discuss Palestinian issues, including the 10-point Islamic Jihad initiative to resolve the international divisions.

Senior Fatah official Azzam Al-Ahmad had previously told Quds Press that the file of the reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah is currently run by the Qatari foreign ministry which pledged to reach a deal with both movements separately before bringing them together.
