Marzouki calls on Essebsi to meet Russia and Iran envoys following Aleppo massacres

Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki has called on President Beji Caid Essebsi to meet with the ambassadors of Russia and Iran in protest against what is happening in Aleppo, Syria, saying the country has ended as an independent state and is now mandated by these two countries.

“The political and humanitarian duty of President Essebsi as the tragedy unfolds in Aleppo is to call the ambassadors of Russia and Iran and demand a stop to the terrible abuses against civilians, especially the field executions,” Marzouki wrote on Facebook.

“Russia and Iran bear full responsibility for what is happening in Syria since it has fallen under their mandate,” adding that it is the duty of the Tunisian people and all the Arab people “to stand with the Syrian people and the people of Aleppo in particular”.

“The Syrian people have endured all these years the brutal forces that wanted to conquer the rebellious peoples,” he added.

The Syrian regime army, backed by Russian and Iranian forces, has seized the opposition-held city of Aleppo in the past few hours.

The United Nations said 82 civilians were killed in their homes in Aleppo, local activists claim the numbers are much higher.
