Kuwait has denied rumours that it has mediated talks between Saudi Arabia and ousted Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The country’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Sulaiman Al-Jarallah stressed that Kuwait has honoured its commitment to aim for reaching a political solution to the Yemen crisis, along with ensuring the country remains united.

“Kuwait hosted consultations for peace between the various Yemeni sides involved in the conflict for more than three months, but there was no agreement that could lead to a political solution to the crisis,” Al Jarallah told the media in Kuwait.

Yemen, which is the Arab world’s poorest country, has been wracked by chaos since late 2014, when the Houthi group overran its capital city Sana’a and other parts of the country in a coup.

Yemen has been locked in a bitter battle between Houthi rebels allied with forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh against government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, along with local tribes and resistance forces backed by a Saudi Arabia-led coalition.
