Egypt’s former presidential candidate Shafiq to return

Egypt’s former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq is expected to return to the country in mid-January, after the Egyptian Passports and Immigration Authority removed his name from an airport watchlist on Monday, sources close to Shafiq revealed.

Shafiq’s attorney, Dina Adly, said Attorney General, Nabil Sadek, has lifted her client’s name from the airport watchlist upon the Criminal Court’s decision issued on 13 December.

The North Cairo Criminal Court Sixth Circuit accepted a lawsuit filed by Shafiq demanding his name be removed from the watchlist.

The proceedings explained that Shafiq fled the country after the Supreme Committee for Elections announced the victory of then President-elect Mohamed Morsi in 2012 and has been living abroad since.

Shafiq had faced various corruption charges but was acquitted or had cases against him dropped.
