Iraqi Sunni political leaders yesterday met with the King of Jordan Abdullah II and discussed a draft bill submitted by the National Iraqi Alliance to achieve a settlement between Iraqi factions.

A source in the Sunni Union of National Forces, who requested anonymity, told the Anadolu Agency: “Vice President, Osama Najafi, Parliament Speaker, Salim Al-Jubouri and former Deputy Prime Minister, Saleh Al-Mutlaq discussed during a special meeting in Jordan with King Abdullah II a political settlement draft bill presented by the National Iraqi Alliance.”

The source explained that “the King of Jordan is playing the role of mediator to converge views between the Sunni and Shia political forces on the political settlement proposal.”

Member of the Iraqi Union of National Forces, Sajida Mohammad, said yesterday that “the involvement of third parties, either Jordan or Iran, in discussing the political settlement draft bill will be a positive step to develop the agreement.”

“Regional players have a direct impact on the political situation in Iraq; therefore, involving neighbouring countries in the subject will be in the interest of Iraq,” she said.

In a statement Al-Jubouri’s media team said he discussed with the Jordanian monarch “bilateral relations and regional developments as well as efforts to combat terrorism”.

The National Iraqi Alliance chairman Ammar Al-Hakim proposed last month an initiative for political settlement which aims to overcome internal and external crises, and achieve development after the expulsion of Daesh.
