UAE soldier killed in Yemen in anti-Houthi operation

A United Arab Emirates (UAE) soldier was killed Saturday in war-torn Yemen as part of a Saudi-led military campaign against Houthi rebels, the country’s army command said.

The Armed Forces Command said the soldier died during operation “Restore Hope” with the Saudi-led Arab coalition defending legitimacy in Yemen, the official WAM news agency reported.

It, however, did not disclose the cause of the soldier’s death.

The UAE is a member of the Saudi-led coalition that launched a massive air campaign in 2015 against Houthi rebels, who overrun the capital Sanaa and other provinces one year earlier.

Two rounds of UN-backed peace talks have failed to resolve the conflict in which thousands of Yemenis are believed to have been killed and an estimated three million forced to flee their homes.
