A student has become the first veiled woman to fly a military plane in Turkey.

Merve Gürbüz, 23, took advantage of a new law allowing college students to attend the Turkish Air Force Academy. The amendment to the law came following the failed coup attempt last year.

Gürbüz, a fourth year student at the Faculty of Computer Engineering at the university of Konya in central Turkey, passed all the tests and examinations and obtained the approval of the required medical staff.

Some 14 experts in aviation supervised her tests over the last six months.

She is currently waiting the last interview in the Turkish Ministry of Defence before she officially becomes a warplane pilot.
