UK PM calls for investigation into reported Syria chemical attack

British Prime Minister Theresa May called for an investigation into reports of a chemical weapons attack in northern Syria today.

“I’m appalled by the reports that there’s been a chemical weapons attack on a town south of Idlib, allegedly by the Syrian regime,” May said while visiting Saudi Arabia.

“If proven, this will be further evidence of the barbarism of the Syrian regime.” She urged the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to investigate the incident.

More than 58 people, mainly civilians, are thought to have been killed in the airstrike in the village of Khan Sheikhun. Hospitals treating those injured in the chemical attack were also targeted in the attacks, according to reports.

May is on a three-day visit to the Middle East which began yesterday in Amman, the capital of Jordan. She arrived in Saudi Arabia on a two-day visit today.
