Further US attacks on Syria will carry a high price, warns Iran

Further US attacks on Syria will carry a high price, Iran’s defence minister has warned. Hossein Dehghan said that the American “operations [against the Syrian regime] will not continue without any response,” Arabi21.com reported on Wednesday.

The Iranian official told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that the US attack on the Syrian Al-Shayrat Air Base was against all international conventions and “flagrant aggression” against an independent country.

He claimed that the cruise missile attack on the base was intended to raise the morale of the “terrorist” fighters in Syria.

Claiming that Washington is trying to mobilise international consensus against the “legitimate government” in Damascus, Dehghan added that America is trying to justify its military presence in the Middle East.

It is a week since US warships in the Mediterranean launched 59 tomahawk cruise missiles at Al-Shayrat, the base from where the Syrian air force is believed to have launched a chemical attack against the town of Khan Shekhoun.
