UNRWA limits staff involvement on social media

UNRWA’s workers’ union has criticised the international organisation for issuing workers with a warning against using social media to discuss Palestinian issues, saying such actions may lead to salary deductions, Quds Press reported.

In an interview with Quds Press, the head of the union’s Gaza office, Amir Al-Mishal, stressed that the agency’s neutrality should not be at the expense of “our national identity”.

He added that UNRWA prevents its staff from taking part in political parties and activities.

On Saturday, UNRWA dismissed the former head of the agency’s staff union in Gaza, Suhail Al-Hindi, over claims circulating on social media that he was elected to Hamas’ leadership.

Al-Hindi denied links to Hamas, describing the accusations as “baseless”.
