Egypt denies plans to establish military base in Eritrea

An Egyptian military source yesterday denied media reports about Cairo’s intention to establish a military base in Eritrea.

The Anadolu Agency reported the source, who refused to be named, saying: “The reports are untrue. Egypt does not plan to establish any bases overseas.”

Sudan Tribune newspaper quoting Eritrean reports saying that Egypt had communicated with Somalia and Djibouti to establish a military base before receiving approval from Eritrea.

A newspaper in Somaliland reported that the Egyptian military base in Eritrea will host some 20,000- 30,000 soldiers.

Eritrea has repeatedly denied reports that foreign countries have established military bases within its borders.
