The attack hit several days into the holy month of Ramadan when restaurants and cafes are packed with Iraqis breaking their fast. Last year during Ramadan Daesh killed almost 300 people when a truck bomb went off in Karrada, a Shia neighbourhood.

Daesh announced that the bomber, that detonated explosives in a parked car, targeted a “gathering of Shia”. Daesh have launched a number of attacks against Shias in an attempt to stir up sectarian violence.

Iraqi soldiers are currently pushing Daesh out of the northern city of Mosul and claim that once they do this it will be the end of the Daesh caliphate in Iraq. Analysts have said that Daesh’s latest attack is to prove they are still present and still able to strike.
