Officials from Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar arrived in Kuwait today ahead of the Gulf summit which is due to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
There had been widespread speculation about whether or not the GCC summit would take place at a time when Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain have initiated an embargo on Qatar.
However diplomatic sources reported that there have been signs of a breakthrough in particular after Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Hamad Al Sabah’s recent visit to Riyadh where he met with Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz who assured him that the Kingdom is happy for the summit to go ahead.

Kuwait has been mediating between the Gulf states since the start of the crisis in early June. This will be the first time officials from each country come face to face since the start of the tensions between them.
The GCC held its last annual summit on 6-7 December 2016 in Manama, Bahrain.
Since its founding in 1981, the council has not cancelled any annual summit because of inter-communal differences.
