Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukri, received a delegation from the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee in Cairo on Tuesday. The Syrian group was headed by Dr Nasr Hariri and included representatives based in the Egyptian capital, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its official Facebook page.

Shoukri discussed with the delegation the latest developments in the Syrian crisis. The minister reiterated his country’s support for a political solution which guarantees Syria’s territorial integrity and preserves the institutions of the state.

A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Ahmed Abu Zeid, said that the Syrian delegation expressed sincere appreciation for the invitation and reception in Cairo. Members also acknowledged the pivotal role played by Egypt in forming a unified negotiating delegation for all of the Syrian opposition groups. Minister Shoukri, he added, stressed the need to resume the ongoing UN-brokered negotiations.
