Egypt’s Salafist Al-Nour party announced yesterday that it backs President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in his bid for a second term in office.

Al-Sisi is “the most capable to achieve stability in the country and spare it dangers,” the party said.

The party “sees Al-Sisi as the most capable to lead the country at this stage”, Al-Nour’s leader Younes Makhyoun said during a press conference.

Makhyoun urged Al-Nour’s members and followers to exercise their right to vote for Al-Sisi.

Another Nour leader, Member of Parliament Ahmed Al-Argawy, told Quds Press that the party instructed its parliamentarians across Egypt’s provinces to mobilise the Egyptian people to take part in the election.

Al-Sisi needs 20 parliamentary endorsements to present his candidacy papers to the National Electoral Commission. Al-Nour holds 12 seats in the 596 seat House of Representatives.

Al-Nour supported the Egyptian army’s coup against the country’s first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
