A senior leadership delegation from Hamas left the Gaza Strip on Friday to go to Cairo, spokesman Fawzi Barhoum has revealed in a press release. The group was headed by former Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, who was accompanied by other members of the movement’s political bureau, Khalil Al-Hayya, Rawhi Mushtaha and Fathi Hammad.

Barhoum explained that the Hamas delegation is going to meet Egyptian officials and hold discussions related to the situation in Gaza and the Palestinian cause in general. “This visit comes as part of previous arrangements within the framework of consultations with Egypt,” he pointed out. “The talks are aimed at easing the life of Gaza’s residents and tackling the crises in the besieged enclave, which is on the brink of collapse.”

He added that the visit is a follow-up to the implementation of the internal reconciliation based on the deals reached in 2011 and 2017, which were brokered by the government in Cairo. Also on the agenda, said Barhoum, will be talks to protect the Palestinian cause in the face of more illegal Israeli settlements and the US move on Jerusalem.

According to Quds Press, this is the second visit for Haniyeh to Cairo since he was elected as the head of Hamas in May last year.
