A number of unions have called on the Algerian Ministry of Education to cancel the decision to dismiss teachers who went on strike, Ennahar Online reported yesterday.

In a joint statement signed by several bodies, the groups expressed their anger with Minister of education Nouria Benghabrit-Remaoun’s decision to dismiss the teachers.

The bloc, which includes five syndicates, said that the Benghabrit-Remaoun’s move “is a flagrant violation of law”.

Meanwhile, the boc expressed its “unlimited support” for the dismissed teachers, noting that it will launch a series of protests on 10 March that will last until the teachers are returned to their posts.

Hundreds of teachers have been on strike for several weeks over better pay and conditions, amid public spending cuts caused by falling energy prices.
