Address by Dr Basheer Nafi at MEMO’s Palestine, ‘Britain and the Balfour Declaration‘ conference held in London on October 7, 2017.

Originally from Gaza, Dr Basheer Nafi is a senior research fellow at Al Jazeera Centre for Studies. He has published extensively – in both Arabic and English – on the history of Arab nationalism and the Palestinian Question, as well as modern Islam and Islamic intellectual history, in various academic journals. He has also a contributed to the UNESCO World History project. His books include, Arabism, Islamism and the Palestine Question: 1908-1941 and The Rise and Decline of the Arab-Islamic Reform Movement.

Understanding the Balfour Declaration 100 years on

This opening session addresses the origins of the Balfour Declaration, featuring historical insights and research into Britain’s motivations and how the Zionist movement successfully persuaded British officials to issue the Declaration.
