Bahrain’s Military Court of Cassation upheld the death sentences on Wednesday given to four civilians convicted of charges including the formation of a terrorist cell and the assassination of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

This is the first time that death sentences have been given by a military court to civilian defendants since Bahrain amended the Constitution in April allowing them to be tried in such courts.

The Military Court of Cassation is the highest military court in Bahrain and its decision is final. However, death sentences can only be carried out after being ratified by the king.
