The Cairo Court for Urgent Matters said yesterday that it has no jurisdiction to close the BBC offices in Egypt and withdraw the broadcaster’s licence.

A lawsuit filed by lawyer Mohammed Hamed Salem claimed that the BBC spread false news in an attempt to destabilise the country and deliberately distort Egypt’s image, especially in the field of human rights.

It added that the director of the BBC office in Egypt published a report in February which contained lies and allegations about a girl called Zubeida whose mother claimed was tortured in Egypt and subjected to enforced disappearance .

The lawsuit also claimed that the BBC supports the Qatari and Turkish regimes.
