Iraq yesterday categorically rejected Iran’s missile attack on sites belonging to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) in the town of Koya as a “violation of its sovereignty”.
A spokesman for the Iraqi foreign ministry, Ahmad Mahjoub, said his country “categorically rejects the violation of Iraqi sovereignty by bombing any target within Iraqi territory without prior coordination with the Iraqi authorities, to spare civilians of the effects of such operations”.
The statement did not explicitly mention Iran but noted “Iraq’s keenness for the security of its neighbors and its refusal to allow its territory to be used to threaten the security of those countries.”
As many as 16 people were killed and 40 others were wounded when missiles hit a base where a party meeting was taking place in the town of Koya, also known as Koysinjaq, near Erbil in northern Iraq.
Earlier on Sunday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the missile attack on PDKI bases in Koya.
