Worker dies after setting himself alight in Jordan

An employee in Jordan’s northern city of Irbid yesterday died after setting himself on fire, Al-Ghad daily reported.

The 30-year-old Jordanian who was an employee at the Greater Irbid Municipality’s Environmental Directorate was in a “critical health condition” receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit at the Princess Basma Hospital.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The man, who has not been named, was said to have been “married with three children and suffered difficult living conditions”, a daily newspaper quoted sources close to him as saying.

The spokesman of the municipality, Ismail Houri, said that the incident took place out of normal working hours, stressing that it had no connection to the municipality.

There have been reports that the man had been protesting against the municipality’s decision to reduce employee bonuses.
