Algeria rights group warns of rising incidents of violence against women

The Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights yesterday warned against the rising incidents of violence against women in the country.

In a statement issued on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women the group said that the General Directorate of National Security registered 7,061 cases of violence against women during the first nine months of 2018.

The head of the league’s national bureau, Hawari Kdour, said the figures do not reflect the true picture of the state of women because many cases are not reported.

The league called for intensifying awareness and media campaigns to combat all forms of violence and gender discrimination, promote respect and equality and guarantee individual freedoms as well as the promotion of a culture of peaceful dialogue.
